It was a blustery morning at Ferndown Forest for an impromptu Top Tracer Competition to break up the "Chrimbo Limbo."
We loaded up The Brabazon @ The Belfry. In Bay 12 was serial golf club buyer Leo, Kian (borrowing his Girlfiend's, Brother's old clubs) and the Man, the Myth, the Legend...Deej - who had know fully unwrapped al of his clubs.
In Bay 13 were all the big hitters...Sam, Harrison, Jasper & Ryan.
Whilst it was a slightly nervy start to the round for most, Deej & Sam managed got off to an early lead with a Par at the 1st. Sam continued his steady Golf until his "tin cup' water moment (film is worth a watch) at the 6th Hole left him "walking" to the next tee with 9 on the scorecard.
I can't say there weren't some smiles from the rest of Bay 13 as Ryan & Jasper both started to make a comeback, whilst Harrison managed to slip ahead of Sam. Harrison's birdie on the 3rd hole and only dropping 2 shots on the next 4 holes put him in a strong position.
Meanwhile, in Bay 12, Kian and Leo got off to a slightly slower start. Kian had a valid excuse of having barely picked up a club before. Leo, was suffering from a strained right arm from too much arm wrestling at his cousins party 2 weeks ago...an excuse so particular in its detail that I didn't even question the validity.
Deej, on the other hand, was flying...after 4 birdies in the first 8 holes, he reached the turn at -4. Kian's unbelievably good pitching and some of Leo's booming drives helped pull them back into it after the nervy start.
Things started to get a little bit tighter on the back 9...Harrison dropped some shots on 10-12, Sam had steadied the ship, Ryan had continued his steady Golf and Jasper had a run of dropping just 1 shot from 9th - 14th.
Kian's found his rhythm in the longer shots, whilst Leo's short game improved...Deej then found the water on the 12th leading to a double bogey 5 at the Par 3.
With only a few holes left, it was pretty tight...in Bay 13, Jasper's steady run continued. Ryan followed a tough 15th hole with a par and a birdie on 16 & 17. Harrison had steadied the ship, but double bogeys at 15 & 17 slowed the momentum. Sam, despite his dodgy 6th hole, had pulled away and was Deej's nearest challenger.
As we were all tiring, both emotionally and physically, we approached the water filled 18th hole. A hole where Ryder Cup's had been won and lost. Leo & Kian both found the water off the tee...and the following shots. Deej bottled it and hit a big slice into the fairway bunker. Bay 12 had already finished their round and were watching Deej with his hybrid out of a fairway bunker, over water to a tricky tiered green. Twas another slightly dodgy shot which stopped just short of trees on the right of the green.
With a 28 yard pitch ahead of him, Deej used his 54* wedge, settled his nerve to pull off his best pitch of the day, landing 2 feet away and giving him his first win of the season.
He donated his £15 Pro Shop voucher to nearest challenger Sam, after his fine performance.
What a morning! Looking forward to the next one already.
